Austin Hansen

Head Judo Instructor

Originally from the greater Kansas City area, Austin began practicing martial arts in 2009, starting in Japanese Jujutsu under the tutelage of Frank Barry.

Mr. Barry’s style of traditional Jujutsu was heavily focused on combat survival and mission success for soldiers and law enforcement professionals, with special consideration to the use of force continuum. The environment was fast, sparring-heavy, and the perfect place to quickly gain real-world practicality.

Austin earned his first black belt in Japanese Jujutsu in 2012, and his second black belt in Judo in 2017, and has continued training through the ascending degrees of proficiency.

Professionally, Austin served with the Lansing Police Department in Lansing, Kansas, from 2015 to 2018, working as a patrol officer, and was appointed as a defensive tactics instructor. Austin served in the Kansas Army National Guard from 2011-2024 and was honorably discharged with 13 years of service as a Sergeant First Class; 5 years in the Infantry and 8 years in the Army Acquisition Corps.

Austin currently holds 4th degree black belts in Judo and traditional Japanese Jujutsu and is active in both Sambo and Combat Jujitsu. Outside of the training hall, he enjoys his own personal training and quality time with his family.

“My teaching philosophy comes from the two principles on which Judo is founded. ‘Seiryoku-Zenyo,’ (精力善用), meaning ‘good use of energy,’ and ‘Jita-Kyoei’ (自他共栄), meaning ‘mutual welfare and benefit.’”
